We had our first reading, signing, and after party for Tearing the Sky at Borderlands Books yesterday, Saturday November 13. It was a wonderful success, and the turnout was beyond our expectations, with standing room only at the back. I began my remarks with a little background on me, in terms of where the book comes from, a brief description of its key concepts and themes, followed by reading a couple of scenes and short clips from the book. The members of the audience asked a lot of great questions, about the resurgence of Golden Age storytelling, identification with characters, and the writing and publishing processes.
I was particularly touched by Borderlands owner Alan Beatts, who gave a wonderfully supportive introduction. He then delivered a huge surprise by giving me a beautiful fountain pen to commemorate my first reading and signing. It was an incredibly meaningful gesture, from a true gentleman. I also want to recognize the support from Jude and Cary from Borderlands, who helped set up the store and book display, as well as our renaissance woman of a PR maven, Angela Nibbs, for helping plan and execute the reading and after party.
And of course, thank you everyone for attending and enjoying the event. This moment was a decade in the making, and it would not have been possible without all your support.
More pictures from the event are on the Tearing the Sky facebook page, in the Borderlands Books Reading album.
Cheers,
Jamil
